Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.  It was first enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the Civil War and was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have passed away in all wars.  Family members often visit the graves of such soldiers and bring flowers and American flags as a token of respect and gratitude.

On Memorial Day the flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.  The half-staff position bears in mind the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

Monday, May 30th is our 2011 day to remember.  Please, honor the brave men and women who have lost their lives in order for us to have ours.
