Scranton playwright Nancy Hasty recently earned first place in the 2009 Jerry Kaufman Playwrighting Competition in New York City for her latest play, “Lawnchairs,” and the Electric Theatre Company will perform the play in its world premiere in March.

Hasty, a rostered artist with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, has written 10 plays that have been produced off-Broadway, regionally and internationally. She is the author, along with her song-writing sister Cyndie Hasty, of “Under the Lackawanna Moon,” performed numerous times in the Dunmore Cemetery and the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Waverly. She currently teaches an arts class within the Lackawanna County Prison.

“Lawnchairs” was developed at The American Renaissance Theater Company before being named a finalist in the Kaufman Competition in January. Scenes from “Lawnchairs” were performed as part of the awards ceremony, as well as scenes from the other nominees.

Electric Theatre Company will premiere “Lawnchairs” with a cast that includes Scranton native Maura Malloy as Geri, and New York based actors, Jennifer Terrell as Bev and Samuel Adams as Benny.
