Last year’s Governor’s Cup champions, our own Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, return to the diamond to open the 2009 season against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs tonight on the road.

The local Yanks’ home opener is scheduled for Friday, April 17, against the Rochester Red Wings and the Yankees are looking forward to another strong season after claiming their first championship in the 20-year history of the franchise. The hometown Yankees have also posted the International League’s top regular-season record in each of the last two seasons.

Big league prospect Austin Jackson, outfielder, will spend significant time with the farm team this season and you can expect to see some New York Yankees on rehab assignments throughout the season including Ian Kennedy, Phil Hughes and Kei Igawa.

Look for another standout season from first baseman Juan Miranda who earned the Yankees’ Player of the Year award last year.
