The Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Scranton Riverwalk on Friday, April 24, at 10:30 a.m. on West Olive Street, across from the Ice Box Sports Complex, in Scranton.

The Scranton Riverwalk will extend one mile from West Olive Street along the Lackawanna River to North Seventh Avenue, Scranton. A spur trail will connect the Riverwalk to Scranton High School.

The Riverwalk is the gateway to the forty-mile Lackawanna River Heritage Trail (LRHT), a multi-purpose recreational trail along the Lackawanna River from Forest City to Pittston.

The Scranton Riverwalk is a key element in the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail system. It will connect the existing CNJ Trail in South Scranton to the Scranton Levee Trail. The Levee Trail will begin at West Olive Street and continue for three miles to Parker Street in Dickson City. The Scranton Levee Trail is currently under development by the Army Corps of Engineers with anticipated completion in late 2009.

The Riverwalk will provide an attractive and enjoyable recreational green space area for residents, the business community, and visitors to Scranton.
