Help kick off the 2008 Transplant Games with a torch run through downtown Scranton.

The Transplant Games, which raise awareness of the importance of organ donation and transplantation, will be held in Pittsburgh July 11-16. In anticipation of the games, downtown Scranton will host one of the statewide Olympic-like torch runs on Monday, June 16, at noon.

If you’re interested in cheering on Transplant Games athletes from Team Philadelphia, gather at courthouse square in Scranton at 11 a.m. The torch run will commence at noon and will cover three to four blocks of the downtown area.

When you arrive at courthouse square, look for the event coordinator, Erika, who will be wearing a white t-shirt that says “Event Staff.” You will receive a t-shirt to wear as you cheer on the torch runners.

The run will end at courthouse square at approximately 12:20 p.m. with a rally and speeches by some of the athletes, organ donor families, Gift of Life representatives and local elected officials including Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty. The entire event should conclude at 1 p.m.

For more information or to volunteer, contact the event coordinator TRE Communications and ask to speak with Erika Wirkkala at (412) 512-3179 or Erika@trecommunications.com; or Casey Mahaven at (412) 253-0677 or Casey@trecommunications.com.
