John Coates Jr. in concert

The Arts — By on April 7, 2006 at 1:04 pm

The Northeast Theatre will present a concert by internationally renowned jazz pianist John Coates Jr. on April 21 at The Performance Space, Jermyn, corner of Wyoming at 326 Spruce, second floor, Downtown Scranton. Coates will draw both from the standard American jazz repertoire, while also lending spice to show tunes, popular songs, and old-time classics.

Coates began playing in clubs when he was 14, recorded his first LP while still a senior in high school and went on to perform on the Steve Allen, Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin TV shows. He has played with Charlie Ventura and has recorded numerous albums and CDs.

A dinner with Coates at 6 p.m., by Carey’s Catering, will precede the concert. Seating at the dinner is limited; dinner tickets must be purchased by April 17. Concert and dinner combined is $60; the concert without the dinner is at 8 p.m. for a ticket price of $38.50. All proceeds benefit The Northeast Theatre.

Tickets are available at the box office Wednesday through Saturday after 3 p.m., by phone at 558-1515 or online at www.thenortheasttheatre.us.

I’ve been to their space before and it’s really cool. I think I might have to look into attending this one.

John has been playing at the Deer Head in Delaware Water Gap for over thirty years. He generally does one or two nights a month there now, sometimes more. (Check out their website for the schedule.) He’ll do about three 60-70 minute sets. The seating is intimate — you’re practically sitting in his lap — and the cover charge is $5. I try never to miss him, he is astounding.

So the time has come and pass. Anyone go and see this show? I had thought about it, but was out of town for the weekend. How about a review???
