Last week (July 12) saw the DVD release of Jean-Pierre Jeunets follow up to Amelie, A Very Long Engagement, starring Audrey Tautou. It’s an epic tale of love and hope set across the end of World War 1 in France and touching all the way back to her and her fiancés childhood in the early 1900s. We follow the story of a young lady’s search to find out if her fiancé is still alive come the end of the war. Tossed over the trenches into no man’s land near the front line at the Somme, along with 4 other soldiers – all of who had been court martialed for self mutilation and now left for dead, she embarks on a fantastic investigation into the trench he had last served as well as searching out those who may well have seen him die. As she holds out all hope the mystery unravels with the help of many of Jeunets regulars from Dominique Pinon to Ticky Holgado and even an appearance by Jodie Foster in her first French speaking roll. A slew of colorful characters, brilliant landscapes and just a touch of fairy-tale weave this magnificent story together. For those not able to catch this films brief appearance in our area I encourage you all to see it now on DVD.
